I.T. IS ALL BUSINESS!
Information Technology is All About Business
In very short order, most new business owners or
managers will come to the clear realization that
business and information technology are inextricably
intertwined. Collecting, organizing and knowing how to
use the data that your day-to-day business activities
generate can give you an invaluable competitive
advantage, streamline operations and reduce overhead
costs. Harnessing the power of your information can do
wondrous things. For example, it can make you more
responsive to your customer's needs, help generate new
revenue with targeted marketing campaigns and reduce the
amount of inventory on hand without sacrificing lead
time. The list goes on and on.
Frustrated Talking to IT
Consultants Who Don't Understand Business?
So you finally decide to
get some help and after several hours conversing with a
highly regarded IT professional, it hits you that this
person has never been in your shoes and hasn't a clue as
to what you're talking about. Too many business owners
and managers have had this sad-but-true experience first
hand. Perhaps a short glimpse into my past will give you
the sense that our dialogue may be different...
The obligatory education background includes a BS in Accounting from Penn
State and graduate work at La Salle College and Villanova
University - a solid foundation to acquire an advanced
understanding of the academics of business. In
the real world, after eight years working for Hewlett-Packard
Company and Cognos
Corporation, I started my first business and worked as
an independent consultant for five years, implementing
and customizing financial software and budgeting
applications. I then started a successful Business
Intelligence technology consulting practice that in five
years grew to 12 employees and over $2 million in annual
revenue. Most recently, I acquired a majority share in a
light manufacturing business that I sold after 6 years. During that time, revenue grew 4.5 times while employee
head-count remained steady. The technology solutions I
built to solve the wide variety of every-day business problems
were the primary reason we could absorb the growth
without hiring additional staff. It was also a key
reason why the company was an attractive acquisition for
the new buyer.
Necessity, they say, is the mother of invention and that
cliché has never been more true than in my various
businesses. I bet it's true in yours, too.
Please contact me if you could benefit from this
inventive, common-sense approach to solving business
technology challenges.
